2 Reasons Why You Wont Find a Job - CareerAlley
5 1/2 Reasons Why You Wont Find a Job - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. With job search, there is a certain element of right spot, right time, but if youve been looking for a job for an extended period of time without any luck you should start to ask why youve not found a job. Maybe you have the missing things in plain sight syndrome (things being what is keeping you from finding a job) or maybe youve hit the wall or maybe its just denial. Whatever the underlying cause and no matter how long youve been looking, its not a bad idea to consider what may be keeping you from finding a job. So, consider the following: You are Not Dressed for the Part: Lets face it, job interviews are really not much different from auditions. You might have the talent, experience and skills but maybe you dont look the part. There is a fine line between dressing correctly and under-dressing. While overdressing is not a fatal mistake, under-dressing or not dressing correctly could definitely kill your chances of getting the job. Not sure how to dress? Call the companys HR department and find out the dress code Find one of your connections on LinkedIn who works for the company and ask Dress as a manager or supervisor would dress Take a look at 5 Tips for Your Job Search Makeover Patience is a Virtue: The job interview process can take some time, especially if you are one of the first to interview. While you should definitely send a thank you note (see below), dont call or email more than once to get a status. Trust me, if they think you are the right person for the job they will call you. Dont arrive too early for the interview (you dont want to seem over-eager) Dont dominate the conversation because you have a lot you would like to say. Let the dialog flow from the interviewers questions (and your questions). Dont ask more than one question about the next step or when can I expect to hear from your or where are you in the interview process. One question along these lines is fine. You Came on Too Strong: Yes, you should have a firm handshake. After that, try to balance your interaction with the interviewer. If you are too pushy and express high expectations early on you will probably not make it to the next round of interviews. Some questions are best left for future interview rounds. While its difficult to avoid the how much do you expect to earn in this role question, you should definitely avoid the how much will I earn question in the first few rounds. They most likely know how much you currently earn and would not interview you if you were out of their price range. Dont ask when can I expect to be promoted. You can (and should) ask about the career path for the position. You Didnt Send a Thank You Note: some people think that Thank You notes (or emails) are old-fashioned. Thank You notes serve two purposes. First (if you use them correctly), they let the hiring manager know that you were listening during the interview (seeCover Letters). Second, a Thank You note is your opportunity to remind the interviewer why you are the perfect person for the role. Dont miss out on this opportunity. Honesty is Not Always the Best Policy (sad but true): Im not saying you should lie, but you dont need to tell the interviewer every dark secret you have (and we all have some). So if the interviewer asks you what your weaknesses are, drinking too much is really not a good answer. There are, however, really good answers to really tough questions (and you wont have to lie). 3 Entry-Level Job Seeking Mistakes to Avoid
3 Entry-Level Job Seeking Mistakes to AvoidAre you an entry-level job seeker looking to get out there and find your first position? Making your first attempt marks the beginning of quite an adventure as you look to meet your goal of entering the workforce. As a newbie, it is easy to make a few mistakes here and there that could slow your ability to find work. So to get a successful start, here are some entry-level mistakes to avoid1. Ignoring the Internet If someone from the old-school world of job seeking has educated you on how to find a job, youve probably been told to open up the classifieds, find a job youre interested in, type up a resume, print it, and mail it to an employer. While this method still works, there is so much mora to gain from conducting your job searches over the Internet. If you havent noticed, many employers post job availability on their Web sites, Craigslist, job boards, or other online formats. Additionally, many employers ask candidates to submit their resu mes online. You can find leads for jobs through social networking sites and can even post your resume online to be found by recruiters. In other words, the benefits of conducting your search online are many and should be utilized in order to realize the success you want.2. Failing to Create Targeted ResumesAnother mistake many entry-level job seekers make is failing to create targeted resumes. This means they dont create new resumes that are geared toward showing that their job history (if any), skills, and accomplishments fall in line with the companys needs when submitting each new job application. If you want to convince an employer that youre the best fit for a job, a targeted resume is the way to go.3. Forgetting to Prepare for the InterviewIts a common mistake of entry-level job seekers to develop a nonchalant attitude toward interviews. If youve never been on one, its hard to know what to expect, of course. And while its true that you shouldnt bite all of your fingernails off before your first interview, you do want to take it seriously, as it is often what will make or break your chances of being hired. So how can you prepare? A good way is to find a list of commonly asked interview questions online, then set up a mock interview where a friend pretends to be the employer and asks you those questions. This gives you a chance to come up with great answers that you can be proud of in your interview.Conducting a successful job search takes practice. And as you know, practice makes perfect. So if you keep your overall career goals in mind while working out the nuances listed above, your practice could land you the perfect job of your dreams. For additional tips and advice on resumes and cover letters, follow us on Twitter GreatResume or visit our blog
